Do you want to create innovative curricula? Do you want to develop new programs? What about implementing educational models for specialty credentials? Or establishing new models of doctoral education? Well, let me introduce ASHA’s Academic Affairs Office. This relatively new unit was created in 1996 to provide “user friendly” service and support targeted specifically to the needs of members in the academic community. Basically, Academic Affairs helps you when it comes to the educational preparation of audiologists and speech-language pathologists. This includes identifying relevant issues (doctoral shortage, instructional innovations); forecasting needs and trends (distance education, professional/career development); recommending policies (monitoring national issues, redesign of higher education); and taking appropriate actions to advance education in the professions. We produce workshops, articles, seminars, technology updates, and position papers. Academic Affairs also provides technical assistance and staff support to the ASHA Executive Board and other ASHA boards and committees.
