Many program directors or chairpersons are wondering how to revise curricula without lengthening the time it takes to complete the master’s degree. Additionally, when undertaking curriculum changes, faculty may voice the following concerns: important course content may be compromised; learning outcomes and the manner in which they are calculated may be changed; and evidence-based practice that is taught within existing courses may be affected. As of July 2004, all accredited academic programs are required to follow the new ASHA standards for academic and clinical graduate programs. New Certification Standards took effect in 2005 for speech-language pathology and will take effect in 2007 for audiology. With the implementation of the Knowledge and Skills Acquisition (KASA) forms for speech-language pathology and audiology (ASHA, 2003) and the resulting scheduling challenges for the courses and types of clinical hours that must be completed by each student, many programs are contemplating curriculum revisions.
