The new ASHA standards and the resulting KASA form provide opportunities and challenges for program and student evaluation, both in summative and formative methods. Faculty are faced with a number of familiar and not-so-familiar terms, including formative assessment, summative assessment, critical thinking, triangulation of data, student learning outcomes, prerequisite knowledge, portfolio assessment, principles of evidence, scoring rubrics, capstone experience, to name a few. For many faculty in communication sciences and disorders (CSD), the increased focus on formative assessment, in particular, causes us to look at student evaluation differently. Further, student-learning outcomes may also be redefined as programs in speech-language pathology and audiology begin to implement ongoing formative evaluation. In the next several issues of Perspectives on Issues in Higher Education, the Gifts From the Web will focus on useful Internet resources to assist CSD training programs to prepare professionals to meet the new ASHA standards in speech-language pathology and audiology. Following are a few resources in the areas of formative assessment and student learning outcomes.
