You may recall a short note in the previous issue of this newsletter announcing an interest in the establishment of a speech-language pathology program in Turkey. The following is detail provided in an Email from Ferda Akdas, Professor and Director, Department of Audiology. He provided the original information and is quoted here directly from a message dated August 15:

Thank you very much for helping us for the establishing Speech Pathology Program in Turkey.

Speech Pathology Program will be the part of the programs of the Marmara University Health Sciences Institute. It will be a similar program to our Audiology program that we are running which is also a part of Marmara University Health Sciences Institute. The teaching staff of the Health Sciences Institude is the faculty of Marmara University Medical School. We can get a help from Anatomy, Physiology, Neurology and ENT Departments or any other Department which took place in the Medical School.

There are four Professors and Associate Professors in ENT and four Professors, Associate and Assistant Professors in the Audiology Department. The programs of the Marmara University Health Sciences Institute leads to master or doctorate degree. The Speech Pathology Program will lead to master’s degree. The students who will enroll in this program will be graduates of Psychology or Physical Therapy schools. These have a four year university education.

The program will be sponsored financially by Fulbright and maybe some amount will be provided by the university through the government (for the latter a special permission required and the Dean of the Medical School agreed to do so).

The model of the program will be similar to the ones in the United States. The one who will come will prepare the curriculum, I will assist him/her in corresponding with other related departments.

At least six or more students will be enrolled to the program.
